SVEA is the Swedish singer making serious waves in pop music. Having opened for huge acts such as Jess Glynne and collaborated with Merk & Kremont, she is on her way to even bigger and better things in 2020.
We caught up with her and chatted about her most recent single Numb, her best gigs and her musical inspirations. Read the full interview below.
Hey SVEA how are you?
Hey, I’m feeling really good thank you for asking.
What made you realise that you could actually turn your passion of singing into a career?
I knew that I wanted to work with music when I realised that it was possible for me to do it for a living. For so many years, singing had been a hobby and I guess it never really occurred to me that I could work with something I love. That was until I met the right people at the right time who showed me it was possible.
We love your latest single Numb! How did the collaboration with Merk & Kremont come about?
Thank you! Merk & Kremont contacted me and asked if I wanted to make a song together and how could I ever say no? I’m a huge fan. They flew over to Stockholm and we recorded Numb. Everyone instantly fell in love with it and it was actually the guys idea to ask Ernia if he wanted to record a verse on it. I’m so happy with how it turned out and I can’t thank people enough for all the love and support we’ve received.
Did you grow up in a musical or creative family?
No I did not. No one in my family is a musician or has any musical skills sadly. But they are so supportive of me doing it and they really wanna be a part of this whole journey which I’m so thankful for. They’ve always wanted me to do the things that I love and they kept pushing me when I was younger to try new things such as learning how to play the piano or guitar etc.
My mom even helped me record music videos for my covers that I uploaded on youtube when I was 12 and it’s those videos that got me to where I am today. I could never do this without my family’s love and support.
What do you like to do when you aren’t creating music?
It’s really important for me to do other stuff than music when I’m not in the studio or performing. I’m either with my friends and family or home watching Netflix and eating food.
I also love to be outside and working out. I really try to do things that gives me energy or inspiration when I’m not working, I use that energy and inspiration later in my work.
What do you wear to feel most confident when you perform on stage?
I wear stuff that makes it easy for me to move around but also makes me look and feel amazing about myself. You know the feeling when you’re looking in the mirror and thinking “Damn gurl u look fire!!” that’s how I wanna feel.
I love things that sparkle or really pops out when I’m on stage, the more confidence I have going up, the more I can enjoy being there and do the one thing I love the most!
What’s your favourite gig that you have ever performed and why?
I have many but one in particular is always gonna have a place in my heart and it was last summer when I performed at a festival in Denmark. It was the first festival I ever played outside of Sweden and I was really nervous. 5 minutes before I went up, there was only three people in front of the stage and I remember how I told my band that we’re just gonna go up and have fun no matter how many people are standing there. 30 seconds in, it got really crowded and people sang along to all my songs. I almost started crying cause it was such a moment.
What were your favourite teenage albums?
I mostly listen to Swedish artists when I was younger such as Veronica Maggio and Robyn. My favorite album was “Och vinnaren är…” by Maggio and “Body talk” by Robyn. When I got a bit older I became a huge fan of Rihanna and her album “Talk that talk” has been one of my absolutely favourite album since. I’m still obsessed with her and her music.
If you didn’t become a musician, what would you be doing instead?
I used to say that I wanted to become a car designer, but I would probably wanna have kids of my own. So, if I didn’t do music I would get a stable job and focusing on starting a family instead of a career. Maybe something creative still.
What’s on the cards for the rest of the year?
Right now nothing’s for certain since we’re facing a major crisis in the world with Corona. Festivals, tours, travels etc is being cancelled and we don’t really know how long it’s gonna take. We just have to take a step back, stay calm and think positive.
The plan is to release a lot of new music this year, which I’m really excited about. I’m currently finishing up my next EP that’s coming out later this year and hopefully I’ll be able to play some shows this summer and later this fall.
