Q+A with Wenzday
We spoke to her about music, fashion and her new EP “Demons Dancing” which she released on her own label 40oz Cult.
Did you always know you wanted to DJ?
From a young age I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in music. I wanted to be in LA because that’s where my peers and mentors were and I knew I could get the most experience from being immersed in the scene here. I actually started in theatre and vocal performance but after discovering DJing I knew that’s what I wanted to focus on.
How would you describe your own sound?
I make bass house which is a combination of heavy bass sounds and house music. I call my genre of music “heartbreak house” because a lot of my inspiration comes from past relationships and conceptually and lyrically I like to pull in themes of love, friendship and independence.
What’s the most exciting moment in your career so far?
Playing EDC (Electric Daisy Festival, Las Vegas) as the fireworks went off! EDC was the first electronic music festival I attended, so to be able to play this event was a dream come true. They do fireworks each night and it’s such a magical moment that I literally teared up when they went off while I was playing one of my own songs!
Who did you listen to growing up?
I was a total emo kid. My favourite bands to this day are The Used, Green Day, Kill Hannah, MSI, Yellowcard, MCR…the list goes on. I grew up attending shows and I met some amazing and accepting people in this scene that really helped shape my music and artistry today.
What’s the best night out you’ve ever been on?
I think EDC 2009. I went as a performer to see DJ AM specifically, but it’s really what sealed the deal for me wanting to produce and perform my own music. Rave culture is a really beautiful thing because of how accepting everyone is and experiencing EDC for the first time, with some of my best friends, was really life changing.
What do you like to do in your downtime?
I love to hike! LA has some amazing spots and because I’m inside a lot making music and playing shows, I try to get outdoors as much as I can. I also love to go camping in the desert to just disconnect and get inspired.
Who’s your dream artist to work?
What’s on the agenda for next year?
Currently, I am promoting my new EP “Demons Dancing” which is out now on my own label 40oz Cult. Next year I have some amazing collaborations dropping with my friends Birthdayy Partyy and KANDY and Dread MC.
