1. Identifying your undertone

The first step in finding the right foundation is to identify your undertone. You need to understand whether your skin is cool, neutral or warm. Looking in the mirror, this can sometimes be a bit tricky, especially if your lighting is bad or you have mixed up your tan routine. The general rule of thumb goes as follows: If you have blue veins and a rosy tint, your undertone will be cool, if you have a golden tone and your veins look green, then you are warm toned. If you sit somewhere in the middle, you will be neutral. Need more info? Read this handy guide on identifying undertones for more info.

2. Know your skin

Are you oily or dry? These are two major factors that should impact your choice of foundation. If you have oily skin, then opt for a long-wear, mattifying foundation. Try and avoid oil-based solutions at all costs. An easy way to do this is by looking for ‘Aqua’ in the ingredients to ensure it is water-based. If you have the opposite problem and suffer from dry or flaky skin, look for something hydrating and luminous, this will help you keep your glow all day long.

3. choose your coverage type

When choosing a foundation tone, you need to decide on your coverage type. Do you want to go with something lightweight, which is subtle and shows through your natural skin and freckles? Or do you want to cover blemishes and pigmentation with a full coverage foundation, that is designed to create a completely neutral complexion. If you want something in the middle, choose a medium coverage formula, which you can choose to build up or sheer out depending on the day. Once example of this is the Missguided Demi Matte Meet Your Match Foundation.

4. If in doubt go for a lighter shade

If you are stuck choosing between a slightly lighter and darker foundation tone, ALWAYS pick the lighter one. You can build it out with bronzer and contouring, but if you go too dark, there is no easy way to fix it.

5. Watch tutorials

When buying makeup, Youtube is our best friend. Watch influencers try out different shades, formulas and products until you find one that closely matches your own requirements.
