What is vitamin c
Vitamin C is a very powerful antioxidant called in its pure form, L-ascorbic acid, which mainly helps brighten your complexion, smooth fine lines but most importantly, protects your skin from damaging free radicals and other environmental stressors. Vitamin C comes in many different forms and also has several derivatives which combine other ingredients in order to help keep the Vitamin C stable and highly effective.
What are the benefits of Vitamin C in skincare?
- Brighten & Add glow:
Vitamin C is very helpful in lightening unwanted brown spots, decreasing brown discoloration, and bringing a glow to your skin.
- Protects against environmental stressors & Smooth fine lines & wrinkles:
One of the main functions of Vitamin C is to protect the skin by keeping it healthy and improving visible signs of aging by promoting collagen production.
- Even skin + reduce pore size:
Vitamin C is a key ingredient in pore-minimizing serums because it helps unclog congested pores, clear dead skin, and reduce excess sebum.
How do you use Vitamin C in your skincare routine?
Vitamin C mixes very well with other skincare ingredients, including exfoliating acids such as Mandelic + Charcoal, Glycolic, or Salicylic as well as other vitamins and antioxidants, such as retinol and niacinamide.
One of the best things about Vitamin C is that it can be used twice daily, both morning and night.
What is Glycolic Acid?
Glycolic Acid is part of the group of active compounds known as alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) that is derived from sugar cane. Glycolic Acid has the smallest molecules in the AHA group of molecules, therefore it has the ability to penetrate the skin’s outer and upper layers, deeply and easily, making it the most effective form of exfoliation.
What are the benefits of Glycolic Acid in skincare?
- Exfoliates & Renew & Brightens
The glycolic acid molecule is able to break down the bonds between the skin cells, so they are removed from the skin layer and stimulate cellular activity to help bring out a fresh, brighter, smooth, and toned complexion.
- Unblock pores & reduce acne
Glycolic Acid does not only exfoliate, but also has the superpower to stop pores from being blocked. When the pore is clogged with sebum, Glycolic Acid exfoliates away the built-up skin and sebum on and around the pore surface.
Glycolic Acid can also be used to reduce the build-up of comedones on the skin surface. Comedones are hair follicles built up with sweat, keratin and dead skin which results in the appearance of whiteheads, blackheads, blemishes and spots. Hence, Glycolic Acid is PERFECT for those who suffer with outbreaks and is particularly effective against a whole range of skin irritation and acne issues (i.e. cystic acne sufferers).
- Suitable for all skin types
Glycolic acid is recommended by dermatologists for all skin types. Glycolic acid both moisturises and brightens young, mature or dry skin – all depending on the amount of glycolic acid your treatment product contains.
How do you use Glycolic Acid in your skincare routine?
As with any exfoliant and acids in general, it’s best to start small if you have sensitive skin or are prone to irritation. If this is your first time trying Glycolic Acid, we suggest starting with low concentration products and using it in a face wash. Overuse can dry out the skin, hence we also recommend pairing Glycolic Acid with hydrating ranges such as our Vitamin C Fix, Dragon’s Blood, or Mandelic + Charcoal ranges.
What is Salicylic Acid?
Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA), which is a type of exfoliating acid. It’s well-known for reducing acne by exfoliating the skin and keeping pores clear. As a BHA, salicylic acid is oil-soluble, which means it can penetrate the skin at a deeper level than water-soluble AHA ingredients.
What are the benefits of Salicylic Acid in skincare?
- Deep exfoliation & Clear clogged pores:
- Anti-inflammatory & Reduce redness:
- Reduce sebum secretion (controls oil production) & Prevents breakouts:
Blackhead and whiteheads form when excess oil mixes with dead skin cells and forms a plug that clogs a pore. Due to its keratolytic properties, salicylic acid delves deep into the skin to dissolve the plugs.
How do you use Salicylic Acid in your skincare routine?
Salicylic acid is best incorporated into a cleanser for gentle exfoliation, or a treatment serum designed to keep blemish-prone skin balanced and under control, says Dr Zamani. If using the latter, be sure to only apply the serum directly to the area you want to treat – don’t slather it all over.
For those with sensitive skin, daily or regular use can potentially dry out or even damage the skin barrier, so keep an eye out for flaky skin or any signs of irritation. ‘SPF must also be used during the day, as with any exfoliating treatment.’
