9 TV shows with an empowering female lead

Now that Autumn has officially begun, we are all on the hunt for a new show to consume our lives. There’s a time and a place for edge-of-the-seat action shows, but hungover Sundays are not the one. Fortunately, we’ve rounded up some easy-watching comedy dramas, all featuring an empowering female lead.

Because if we are spending 12 hours in our PJs, we at least want to feel good while we do it.

Our favourite shows with a female lead

Spoiler alert: Just to warn you, we might have dropped a few spoilers below. We’ve warned you now, so our work is done. 🤷

1. Fleabag

Where to watch: BBC iPlayer

Fleabag goes without saying. Not only did Phoebe Waller Bridge pick up two Emmys for the show this week, but she also made us realise that it’s okay to be a bit of a mess. The show is about sisters, relationships, sex, foxes and a hot priest (you just have to watch it, promise).

2. Glow

Where to watch: Netflix

The gorgeous ladies of wrestling are everything we want to be. The show is based on a real 80s wrestling group and written by the creators of Orange is the New Black. It is filled with lycra, glitter and leg warmers. If this doesn’t make you want to host a themed fancy dress party, nothing will.

3. Russian Doll

Where to watch: Netflix

Written by women, directed by women and starring Natasha Lyonne, this series is seriously binge-worthy. Natasha plays the troubled cool-girl, surrounded by arty friends in her quirky loft apartment. On her 36th birthday she dies and relives her last day over and over. It’s Groundhog day for the Netflix generation.

4. Orange Is The New Black

Where to watch: Netflix

If you haven’t watched OITNB yet, where have you been? Crawl out from under that rock and hit play. Set in a women’s prison, it follows Piper Chapman’s adjustment to life behind bars. Each episode delves into the background of one of her fellow inmates and explores how they ended up inside.

5. Jane The Virgin

Where to watch: Netflix

Jane is a 23-year-old virgin that gets accidentally inseminated during a routine check up. We admit that it may be a little far-fetched, but bear with us. It is shot and edited like a classic Latin American Telenovela, meaning it’s funny, over the top and ever-so dramatic.

6. Parks & Recreation

Where to watch: Amazon Prime

Leslie Knope is the ultimate female lead. She works for the parks department in her council and is so passionate about her (seemingly) boring job. Surrounded by a group of her close friends and colleagues, the mockumentary follows her relationships, work life and friendships.

7. The Mindy Project

Where to watch: Netflix

Written by Mindy Kaling, this show is her absolute baby. She plays a successful doctor trying to balance her complicated love life with her job. Mindy’s character is relatable and normal, letting us know that sometimes it’s okay to not be okay.

8. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Where to watch: Netflix

So we all grew up watching Sabrina the Teenage Witch after school, but this series has had a bit of an update. It’s scarier than we remember and has some slight American Horror Story vibes. Created by the team behind Riverdale, it follows 16-year-old Sabrina whilst she works through the decision between living as a witch or as a human.

9. Big Little Lies – Amazon Prime

Where to watch: Amazon Prime

Based on the best-selling book, this series follows three women with seemingly perfect suburban lives, but a murder changes everything. Starring Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Meryl Streep and Zoe Kravitz, could we ask for a better cast?
