An Actually Useful Guide to Mindfulness

With so much talk of new year, new you, the fact we’re all skint, the fact it’s dark when you leave for work in the morning and dark when you leave work in the evening,  teamed with the fact it’s f*cking freezing (!!!) – it’s easy to let January get you down.

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a technique to help manage and overcome stress, anxiety or confidence issues you have, and we’re all for that. Feeling your best self lifts your mood, which will instantly lift the mood of those around you.

Your vibe attracts your tribe, so surround yourself with positive people who lift you up on the daily, and remove yourself from frenemies who bring you down.

If it’s uni work or the office job that’s effecting your wellness, try making lists to break down what’s really important and to help prioritise your daily tasks. Stop telling yourself ‘I’m really busy’ and instead start ticking off those boxes on your to-do list. You’ll soon be telling yourself ‘I’m a f*cking boss’ instead.

Give yourself 10 mins of me-time every day. Whether it’s time to sit and paint your nails, putting on your favourite tunes and belting them into your hairbrush or 10 mins of meditation (try the ‘Calm‘ or ‘Headspace‘ apps!), you’ll feel refreshed and calm for the day ahead.

Try and live in the present. Mindfulness is all about the right here and now. Focusing on the past can trigger depression and worrying about the future can increase anxiety, so instead focus your thoughts on what’s happening right now.

We spoke to wellness and fitness blogger @CatMeffan to find out her 5 tips to achieving mirthfulness on the daily. Read below for more:

Five Tips for Wellness

As a wellness blogger and yoga teacher who is constantly travelling I have to be on top of my wellness game. Travelling, filming and shooting can leave me feeling pretty exhausted a lot of the time, so there are a few things that I do to keep my wellness levels in check.

Nighttime Routine

We hear a lot about the morning routine and even though it’s a great thing to have, I actually think that I nighttime routine is slightly more key to our wellness, as it gears us up for a good night’s sleep, which is one of the most important factors of a healthy lifestyle. Even those of us that like a party, need sleep! I set an alarm one hour before I want to be asleep. This signals the start of my ‘wind-down’ time. My phone goes away, a candle will go on (if there isn’t already one on), I’ll meditate or read for a bit and slowly make my way up to bed. Having this regular routine allows me to sleep better and therefore be more productive the day after.


You’ve heard it a million times, so I’m just popping it in here to remind you. Water is a crucial part of wellbeing and no, coffee doesn’t count! We need to be drinking around 8 glasses each day, more if you can. I know it’s harder in the cold months, I’ve been struggling a little lately too, but I have a refillable water bottle I take everywhere with me, so I know I’ve always got some in my bag and can just sip throughout the day. Here’s to that miracle fluid giving us a perkier brain and clearer skin.


Whatever it is, move! Whether you go to a dance class, walk around the park or go the gym, just find something that you enjoy and wiggle around. Our bodies need to feel change and feel challenged, so mix it up with something new every no and again. Don’t go to the gym if you hate it, findsomething that suits you better… I hear yoga is pretty awesome! Plus, it doesn’t have to be expensive, you can find hundreds of fitness and yoga tutorials online for free, just make sure you go to someone who is fully qualified.


It’s so key that we connect with our ‘inner child’ throughout our adult years, so surrounding yourself with people who can be silly, having people with you who make you laugh and just being able to see the funny side of things is a great way to release so happy energy into the brain. It’s also something you can bring into your fitness… so rather than going to the gym, maybe go back to a hobby you loved when you were young, or get involved in team sports. I now do bouldering which I love. I just feel like a kid in the park!


I’m a big fan of journaling , but I know it isn’t for everyone. It can be a hard habit to get into, so here’s a suggestion to get you started. Have a little notebook and pen by your bed and every night when you get under the duvet, open it up and write down just one thing that you’re grateful for that day. There’s no need to overthink it, just write down what comes to you first and if you feel like writing more, go for it. This is such a nice thing to do and maybe add into your nighttime routine, a way of reflecting and getting out any stresses or worries before bed. If not, it’s time to put on the reading light and settle down.
