How to combat the January sadness

With uncertainty ahead and Christmas over, it’s important to take care of yourself.

January blues are a real thing and after a shambles of a year, we have a feeling they are gonna hit pretty hard in 2021. By 5th of January, we are usually pretty skint, the weather is poor and we’ve eaten all the Christmas chocolate. This year will feel even harder, with an uncertainty around the future and possible lockdowns impending, it is important to take steps to combat January sadness and prevent it from having an impact on our day to day lives.

1. Exercise

When we feel a bit crap, exercise is probably at the bottom of our to do list, but nothing gets the serotonin flowing like a run, a yoga session or a speedy HIIT class. You don’t have to head out in the pouring rain to go to the gym, just find yourself a 15-minute class on youtube and get it out of the way first thing. You’ll thank us later. Want a little inspo? 2. Self care

Self care doesn’t always mean a face mask and a skin routine (although it does for some!). Self care is about taking some time out of your day to ensure you are focussing on yourself. Whether that is taking a bath, treating yourself to your favourite chocolate bar, streaming your comfort show or reading a book. It’s time to put all your worries and responsibilities to one side and just enjoy a bit of you time.

3. Manifestation

If you haven’t tried manifestation before, it’s basically willing something you want to happen and working on making a reality. Use journals to write down your goals for the year and work on making them happen. It starts with positive thoughts and continues through your actions.

4. Cooking

Taking time to cook your own meals, try something new and adding some nutrients to your diet is not only good for your physical health, but your mental health too. Try whipping up your favourite meal from the Chinese takeaway, or making some healthier brownies.

5. Talk to someone

If you are feeling lonely, try speaking to your housemates, calling a friend or chatting to someone you trusts. Nobody should have to feel like they can’t express their feelings. For professional advice, see our list of who to contact if you are struggling with your mental health.
