Its safe to say that 2020 has been…a year. This makes a fresh start in 2021 feel extremely appealing. People usually create a New Year’s resolution that helps them get started on the right foot. But unfortunately, traditional New Year’s resolutions usually end within a couple of weeks. Mostly because it’s just too much of a transition to stick to. Our brains naturally cannot make dramatic shifts in behaviour last. So, it’s better to make a New Years resolution that involves adapting your habits, rather than drastically changing them.

Instead of going on a typical fad diet, or saving your entire paycheck, why not try something different this year? Check our suggestions below. But first, we have a bunch of evaluations to make, to come up with the perfect resolution.

When creating New Years resolutions, ask yourself questions like:

  • How do you really want to feel?
  • What energy do you want to improve? Will this resolution help to give you this energy?
  • Would you honestly recommend this resolution to a friend or family member?
  • Are you giving to yourself or taking it away? Does this resolution involve restricting things you love?
  • How would this resolution impact you 10 years from now?

Hide your self-view on Zoom meetings

We see ourselves through a morphed computer screen more than the mirror these days, so it’s no wonder mental health issues and depression has spiked this year. Getting locked into staring at yourself for hours on a video call can truly have a terrible impact on your self-esteem.

This simple new years resolution can be really helpful for you mentally and is so easy to stick to. Adjust your video settings so that you can no longer see yourself during video calls (If you are not sure how, that’s what google is here for gal). Not only will you feel better, but you will be much more present in your meetings.

Commit to doing exercise that you actually like

At least one thing has come out of this year, you can avoid the New Year inspired packed out gyms. Home workout equipment is flying off the shelves. We’ve all challenged ourselves to a couple home workouts that leave us gasping for air and chugging water. But why do we do this to ourselves? Why can’t we find a workout that we can actually have fun while doing?

Working out should, in theory, bring us fulfilment, but it doesn’t always feel that way. So, find a home workout that encompasses both fitness and fun. Curate your Social Media feeds

Sort out your Social Media clutter, we all have it. It’s safe to say that we could all spend less time scrolling social media if we sorted through who we actually want to see and who we don’t. Purge all the accounts that don’t fit with your values, promote unhealthy and unsustainable products, and dampen your spirits. Buy clothes that fit the body you have right now

It’s completely understandable if your body has fluctuated this year. It can be frustrating if your old outfits don’t fit like they used to, but this year has been like no other. Our bodies have never spent so much time indoors, so it’s only natural if they change to their environments. Hanging onto these clothes that don’t fit is like reminding yourself of unmet goals. You should be grateful that your body got you through this year, that is an accomplishment in itself. Donate your unused clothes and make space for garments that you feel and look great this year.

Declutter, rearrange, or redecorate your space

Our space and environment directly impact how we feel, so take some time to look at your space and decide if it is accurately reflecting where you want to be and what you want to achieve. If you are working from home, make your makeshift office works for you. Invest in an appropriate office chair, grab some decorative desk accessories, paint the walls your fave colour to make working from home a little bit more like you.
