Q+A with The Money Fox

Origninally from Gloucestershire, 30-year-old Francesca has been using her platform to help her followers with everything money-related, from managing debt to retiring a millionaire. We caught up her to find out why she started her finance account and the best parts about the job. Keep reading to see her fave finance tips and more.

When did you first become money conscious?

A few years ago when I had my daughter and was on maternity pay, I wasn’t used to the drop in income and wasn’t sure what to do! Before that, I had always been pretty sensible about money, but had no clue about things like pensions or investing. I just tried to enjoy myself, save some money and stay out of debt. When I found myself on a really low income and an unsupportive partner, I knew that I had to make some drastic changes, and that involved making more money, and managing the money that I did have. I was determined to change my life!

What made you want to help others with their finances?

When I had found myself in that situation, I tried to find resources that would help me specifically, as all of the advice I could find was about selling your assets (car, boat, house etc) and I didn’t have any of that. I didn’t want anyone to feel as lost and alone as I had done, so I started to share my tips and anything that worked for me.

If someone is struggling with debt or anxiety around their finances, what is the first step they should take?

The first step is to be gentle with yourself. We tend to beat ourselves up and tell ourselves that we are the only one to feel like that, but there are many more people in the same situation. It’s good to join a community, which is the vibe that I am trying to create on my Instagram. Everyone is welcome, and I share non-judgemental money tips.

What is the most rewarding part of running @the.moneyfox on Instagram?

When I get messages from people saying that I have changed their life.Sometimes when you are on social media or writing, it can feel like you are just talking to yourself or into a void, so it means the world when people tell me how much of an impact I have had.

If you could only share one finance tip, what would it be?

It would be to start investing. It’s an area that I think it’s talked about enough, and I feel particularly strongly about helping women to invest – we are statistically better at investing, but the amount of women who invest is quite small. There are a lot of myths out there when it comes to investing, but you can start with small amounts and build your wealth this way.We don’t all have the same amount of privilege, but investing is something that I want all women to know that they can do, no matter their circumstances.
