Playmate Profiles: Raquel Pomplun
We caught up with actress, model, dancer and Playmate, Raquel Pomplun. We chatted to her about her modelling journey, her Playboy experience and sexual empowerment. Raquel was the first ever Mexican Playmate of the Year back in 2013 and she has since established herself as an upstanding representative of the brand and role model for young women.
In case you didn’t know, a Playmate is a model that has been featured in the centrefold of the monthly Playboy magazine. Once you have been given the prestigious title of Playmate, this is something you hold for the rest of your life.
Every week we will be catching up with a new Playmate, so make sure you check back for the latest interview.
Raquel Pomplun Q+A
Can you tell us a little about your modelling journey?
To tell a “little about my journey” is difficult, for it has been a vast and incredible one! However, when I first started modelling I was 13 years old, living in the city of Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, which is where I basically grew up (I came to the US the following year). I started modelling because my older brother’s girlfriend at the time was one of the top models in Tijuana and invited me to her school. And then, the rest is an incredible history!
How did the opportunity with Playboy come about?
I actually wanted to pose for Playboy to pay for my college! So I submitted my photos online and I was actually discovered there. Pretty good odds for me, given that thousands of women where submitting daily.
What does your role as a Playmate entail?
The same as every single playmate in history: to be myself. With that, to represent the brand itself for we are it’s ambassadors: Once a playmate, always a playmate.
What has been the highlight of the job?
Travel! I got to see many parts of the world with Playboy promotions! Ok, yes, that was cool, but in all honesty, the immense amount of sisters that I acquired instantly was, and has been, pretty amazing.
What is 1 surprising thing about being a Playmate that people might not know?
Hahahahah do you really want me to answer this??? Ok, well, people are always surprised that I am not a pornstar and that I am married, have been even before I was a Playmate. Yep, that is it… nothing big.
What do you want to use your influential platform for?
Empower women and their natural given sexuality. Women are still very stigmatized worldwide when it comes to sex and owning their sexuality. I believe that it is very important for us women to understand that we have desires and needs that can be just as potent as men, if not bigger. It’s ok to have questions and ask them, its ok to have preferences, its ok to be curious, its ok to want…
What’s your empowering ‘boss babe’ mantra?
Always focus on the solution, it’s funner and evolving.
What figures do you look up to in life and why?
I have soooo many, but right now, the one that stands out the most is JLo, she was always told that she was doing too much, and look at her now. I, too, do “too much.”
What advice would you give to your teenage self?
Dump him, he ain’t worth it, and go to prom.
What does being a Playmate mean to you?
Independence: being a playmate has liberated me in so many ways. It has also set me in a world of constant growth and challenges, and what better than knowledge to be completely independent? Correcto.
