We caught up with artist and producer Mstr Rogers to talk music, career highlights and project collaborations with Lana Del Ray, Demi Lovato and Mark Ronson.
Tell us about yourself…
I’m an Australian born music artist/producer who spent most of his musical life in London, and has been living in LA for the last 3 years.
What does a day in the life of MSTR ROGERS look like?
Depends on what I’m currently working on really! I have spent most my time until recently writing and producing for other artists. Now, MSTR Rogers is my main focus, the majority of my time is spent working on this. Either preparing live shows, DJ sets, etc. Generally, on most given days, I’m writing and producing! That’s my happy space!! Specifically, my day generally starts with a swim. I LOVE swimming! Then it’s off to the studio either working on MSTR Rogers records, or writing and producing for other artists.
When did you first realise you wanted to make music?
In the womb! Well, almost! I grew up in a musical family. I guess it was always there and I always loved it.
How would you describe your sound?
Electronic I guess. I grew up playing instruments (classical piano) and when I started producing and working in studios, it was recording a lot of live bands / instruments. I’ve always loved that and still try and incorporate that in my sound.
Your latest track ‘Sooner Or Later’ featuring Inka Woods is out now, how would you say your sound is evolving?
I’m told it’s getting a little more chilled?! I don’t know…I don’t like to put labels on things much to be honest. I just make what feels right, for now and for the song. I will say (going back to your previous questions) that I think there is going to be a lot more live instrumentation in my stuff moving forward. It will always be routed in electronic/dance…but I’m feeling drawn to more organic stuff right now.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever played?
Rod Lava Arena in Melbourne, Australia.
You’ve written and produced tracks for the likes of Demi Lovato, Mark Ronson and Lana Del Rey, what has been your favourite project to work on?
They’re all different and great in their own way. No 2 sessions are ever the same. I could share memories/experiences from every one of them that would be equally great. It’s such an interesting process; it takes everyone in the room to become very open and honest. We all have to be prepared to suck during the process. That creates a special bond between each other. They’re also all be so different musically. That’s what I love most. Taking on new challenges and learning new things all the time.
If you could collaborate with anyone who would it be and why?
Chris Martin hands down! I just think he is one of the greatest song writers of our time! He manages to hit you in the heart every time, regardless of whether its a love song, ballad or uptempo.
Who did you listen to growing up?
An eclectic mix of things. Keith Green (my Dad loved him, a super raw, piano pounding gospel singer), Prince, U2, Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk…I wasn’t one of those listeners who bought every record and listened to it on repeat. I loved taking in a lot of different things. I also listened and played a lot of classical music.
Who’s your biggest musical inspiration?
Anyone who is true to themselves, making honest and creatively inspiring music really. There are so many great artists out their right now. We live in an era where we get access to many great records so easily. Historically, Prince would have been one of my biggest…but like I say, there are loads!
What’s your guilty pleasure track?
‘Sexy MF’ by Prince!
What’s the last album you listened to all the way through?
Too long ago to remember!
What’s been your career highlight/proudest moment?
That’s a tough one…each time I finish a track I’m super happy with, I genuinely get so ‘high’. I feel on top of the world. Even before anyone else has heard it. I guess it’s that feeling you get when you’ve finally completed what you heard in your head for so long. I always get super happy when I accidentally hear something I’ve made on the radio or in a shop or blasting out of someone’s car. That’s a pretty cool feeling. Knowing you’ve connected with someone though music.
Who’s the coolest person you’ve worked with so far?
I can’t choose one, they’re all cool!
Who are you listening to at the moment?
Many many many things. When I’m in deep on MSTR Rogers…I’m flicking around Spotify like someone with a serious case of A.D.D. Just trying to take in as much great music as I can if that makes sense.
What advice do you have for aspiring artists trying to break into the industry?
Find out who you are, what you want to say and how you want that to be presented! Write as many songs as you can. A great song which transcends genre, style, production whatever. I genuinely believe it’s a great song that connects with people at the end of the day.
You can only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what is it?
Oh man…you’re killing me!! Probably a classical album made up of all the greats. That stuff never dates. I be scared to name a pop record, because I’d probably get sick of that at some point. Classical, it just lasts forever really!
Where can we see you perform next?
Announcements coming soon, watch this space.
What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2017?
Lot’s more music being released and lots of shows! It’s a very exciting time!
