#MissguidedDiscovered: Becca D
We caught up with MTV presenter, DJ, owner of DEADLY and all-round mega-babe Becca D ahead of her set at Farr Festival to chat careers, highlights and what she thinks we should be listening to this summer.
When did you first realise you wanted to work in the music industry?
I actually started out in fashion – I studied Styling and Photography and then went on working for a magazine, personal shopping, modelling and freelance styling. I always loved music, but it was more of a passion than a career. When I started presenting and DJing 5 years ago, I realised that it could be so much more than just a passion!
Who did you listen to growing up?
A lot of classic old school reggae – Toots & The Maytals, Desmond Dekker, Dennis Brown, Peter Tosh. I have a lot of Jamaican family so reggae was always playing in our house. My family are all musicians, music heads and instrumentalists, so besides reggae we had all sorts of sounds playing, from Audioslave to Kanye West.
Who’s your biggest musical inspiration?
David Rodigan. I’ve learnt so much from him.
What’s your guilty pleasure track?
Justin Bieber – Sorry
What’s the last album you listened to all the way through?
Solange – A Seat At The Table – on the plane last night, still completely obsessed.
What’s been your career highlight/proudest moment?
Very hard to pick one as I do so many different things! Having my own music show on MTV – MTV Live Stage. Hosting the MTV EMA’s backstage show with Sway was a highlight – He’s such a legend in the game so I was very proud to be standing next to him. Djing at Glastonbury was up there. Launching my own music platform DEADLY (www.deadlyofficial.com) which showcases the hottest reggae and dancehall talent from LDN to UK through live sessions, interviews, radio and events – it’s been so well received so far!
Who’s the coolest person you’ve worked with so far?
Protoje. He’s a great friend but we also work together a lot, were putting on a party August 10th (I’ll drop the details on the website/ my socials) and I supported him on his UK tour twice. Very inspirational to see him work and he’s super supportive. And just so f*****g cool!
Who are you listening to at the moment?
Alkaline, Stefflon Don, Tash Sultana, an up and coming artist called Tessellated…
You can only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what is it?
Jamie Woon – Making Time. It’s timeless and has a very calming effect on me, it’s one of my most listened to albums.
Where can we see you play next?
Farr Festival 15th July, DEADLY 10th August!
What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2017?
Summer is always the busiest time – so many festivals, new shows and events! Very busy with MTV, I’ve got some super sick stuff dropping with DEADLY this year and I’ll probably be winding down in Jamaica towards the end of the year.
Farr Festival is held at Bygrave Woods, Hertfordshire from 13th-15th July 2017.
