Birmingham born, Midlands raised Eva Lazarus is making her mark on the music scene. We caught up with her to chat musical inspo, her close family ties and what’s on the agenda for 2017.
What does a day in the life of Eva Lazarus look like?
There is no typical day in the life of, it’s rare I have a day off. Sometimes I’m up early af travelling from Bristol to LDN/MCR/airport to studio sessions or shows OR I get out of bed whenever I feel like it and do all my emails/calls/writing from home.
If I get a day off though, I don’t wanna go anywhere or see anyone. I stay in bed, watch Kung Fu films, Archer, Rick & Morty, eat in bed, get crumbs everywhere, paint my nails, wallow in the mess and enjoy every second.
How would you describe your aesthetic and how does it inspire your music?
I never feel restricted in music or fashion – I wear what I like, I make whatever sort of music I like.
It’s nice to live like this! I can’t imagine a life where I only styled myself one way and only made one genre of music.
Who’s the coolest person you’ve met so far?
I’m not a fan girl very often but I met Erykah Badu in NYC a year ago. It was after a DJ show she was playing and I felt kinda nervous and shy – she is probably the coolest person on the face of the earth.
What’s the best gig you have ever played?
Lions Den stage at Boomtown 2016 with Mungo’s Hi Fi, Jman, Charlie P and YT.
Boomtown is one of my favourite festivals – the sun was out, thousands of people were there, vibes!
Who would you like to collaborate with and why?
The list is LONG but I’d love to collab with Nai Palm, Shy FX, Jordan Rakei, Anderson. Paak…. I’d actually really love to collab with my brother Zak and my aunty Charmaine on something – I have a talented family, I’m sure we will make something happen at some point!
Why do you think the relationship between fashion and music is so strong?
They are both forms of expression! They have a symbiotic relationship in that; scenes of music lovers regularly adopt a particular fashion sense.
Music feeds fashion and vice versa, I also feel that changes in both music and fashion happen around politics. It’s a fascinating eco system that produced the mini skirt and for that I am grateful! haha!
What’s your favourite music video?
Missy Elliot – Work it.
That woman is incredible.
Who did you listen to growing up?
I grew up listening to my mum’s music! Fugees, Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, Aretha Franklin, Omar, LOTS of Jungle and D&B. My mum has amazing taste in music so I was happy to listen to the same things she was into. I went through a Rock/Metal fan phase too, I think that confused my mum haha! Like…”I have no daughter” I love a mosh pit though haha!

Who is your style icon and why?
I don’t really have one…is that boring? probably! I’m okay with it though!
Where do you look for fashion inspiration?
Lookbook or IG if I’m planning a shoot but in general I love happening upon one random item that I like and building a look around it!

Leather, fringing and studs because I have a secret wish to be a biker…. one day…. one day!
