Meet IMAN. She’s the London-based artist whose music you need to know. We caught up with her to chat inspiration, fave gigs and dream collabs…
Tell us about yourself…
My name is IMAN I am a London based artist. I write my own songs and sometimes direct and co-edit my own music videos that are on YouTube. I have my new release called WISHING out on Spotify now ☺
How would you describe your aesthetic and how does it inspire your music?
I love colour and playing with different textures. I prefer comfort but am sometimes willing to do the whole fashion pain thing. I tend to go for the covered look and absolutely embrace my shape so I let my silhouette do the talking. Onstage l like to wear things that enhance my shoulders and nip me in at the waist.
Who’s the coolest person you’ve met so far?
Julien MacDonald. The nicest most down to earth person ever.
What’s the best gig you have ever played?
It was to a sold out crowd of 5,000 people with Rudimental
Who would you like to collaborate with and why?
Drake. He is one of the dopest songwriters of our time.
Why do you think the relationship between fashion and music is so strong?
Both are strong forms of expression that are always evolving depending on how you feel. The statement you can make on a day to day basis just by what you choose to wear is always so personal and even empowering on occasions. Same goes with music, the genres we listen to can often influence the types of people we may choose to hang with. For me, I’ve found music and fashion is almost like a set of values whereby you can find common ground and even create bonds with people. Both are so personal, emotive and influential in many ways. They’ve always worked hand in hand effortlessly..
What’s your favourite music video?
The M.I.A. ‘Bad Girls’ video definitely comes to mind. I love how she played on the whole female driver angle and did it in solidarity with the ‘Women to Drive Movement’.
Who did you listen to growing up?
Tracey Chapman, Jill Scott, Cat Stevens, Dr.Dre, Whitney Houston, Eminem.
Who’s your biggest musical inspiration?
So many artists inspire me. Mainly artists that come with beautiful melodies and lyrics that I can relate to.
What’s your guilty pleasure, most played track?
I used to rinse Cleopatra – ‘Comin at ya’
Last album you listened to all the way through?
Kano – Made in the Manor
What track gives you goose bumps?
Adele, ‘Melt My Heart To Stone’.
What item of clothing can’t you live without?
High waisted skinny jeans!
What items do you make sure you pack on your travels?
If it’s to a hot Country it’s all about my high waisted black jean shorts, a few bikini’s, sliders and shades. Pack a few play suits for stage and nude heels that usually go with everything. Also got to take a whole load of hair product to keep my curls in check.
Who is your style icon and why?
Solange Knowles is pretty cool. Simple, elegant and edgy. She has a great eye for colour and mixing different textures.
Nicole Ritchie has a cool sense of style too.
Where do you look for fashion inspiration?
Misguided website, music videos and what girls are wearing out and about.
What best describes your style?
When I’m in the studio I tend to wear either my big black or emerald green faux fur coat, skinny leather pants, a cool top with my colourful Nike high tops. I wear lots of rings and finish it with red lipstick. Onstage I love to wear play suits that take me in at the waist, sometimes I’ll rock it with high heels or nikes. I enjoy feminine clothes that show my silhouette, I like print but, I’m not crazy on it so tend to go for clothes that are blocks of colour. For an outfit I think it’s cool to have one item be the stand out piece, so that could be the coat, the shoes or the top. That’s what I like.
What’s your favourite fashion trend this season and why?
For the Spring of 2017 I’m loving the bold colours coming through. Love a bit of orange and a strong green. Lush!
If you could steal anyone’s wardrobe who’s would it be?
I’m afraid one girl’s wardrobe may not be enough. So, it would have be my girls Solange and Nicole Ritchie. Oh and FKA Twigs I’m sure would have a wardrobe full of goodies too. We could all share.
You can only wear one outfit for the rest of the year, what is it?
I have a misguided bright orange, long sleeve shirt dress. It has two slits at the front and I LOVE wearing it onstage with my heels or dressed down with white trainers and a cropped
Leather jacket. I always get so many compliments wearing it. One of my best buys, an all rounder for sure.
