Tell us about yourself…

Hey! Thanks for having me. My name is Klaudia. I’m a  vocalist, songwriter and cellist based in the UK.

How would you describe your sound?

I’d describe my music as pop-infused with dancehall and elements of Afro beat. Vocally, I stay consistent with soulful, husky tones, even if the genre varies, I think that’s my staple sound. My songwriting always comes from real-life situations and experiences. It’s important to stay relevant and true to yourself.

What does a day in the life of Klaudia look like?

Haha, if only! i usually start my day at the gym. Fitness is a big part of my life, so you could say I spend a lot of time there. I’d then catch up on emails and attend to my socials. Being an artist is like running a brand.  A lot of groundwork, planning and brand management happens online. On recording days, I’d travel up to Southampton, where I record at a studio with my producer. Sessions are normally 5-6 hours so I’d spend most of my day there! Being in a creative environment is my happy place because nothing else matters in that moment, but creating music and writing. I then try and see my friends in the evenings and see what’s on in town! I try and squeeze as many things into my day as possible, then complain I’m always tired haha.

When did you first realise you wanted to make music?

I was first introduced to music at the age of 8. It began with classical cello and piano. So I’ve always wanted to be a musician since I was a kid. However, as i got older, I felt classical music limited me as I needed more creative freedom. I also wanted to play to a different type of audience.

So, to move away from classical music, I took a BTEC course in pop & jazz at college hoping to explore more current sounds. I adapted cello to pop/funk/jazz music as we were put into bands with those genres. At this point I still didn’t know I could, or wanted, to sing! It all happened by chance really. I wrote a song on cello for the lead singer of the band one day and sung it to show him how it went. They all suggested I sing it and play cello at the same time. This was all new to me, but having the cello there in front of me gave me more confidence to do it on stage!

That was the official start to my singing and songwriting as, after that, I was hooked on creating music and performing it.

I then further developed my singing and writing at The University of Southampton during my music degree.

Who would you say your musical influences are?

Last year I was obsessed with house music. I was making it, collaborating with house DJ/producers and listening to it everyday. Artists like Disclosure, Gorgon City and Clean Bandit were huge influences. I loved their fresh sound and catchy vocal hooks.

Vocally, I’ve always been influenced by the likes of Nina Simone, Nao,  Macy Grey, Amy Winehouse, Shakka Khan etc. So basically, rich tone, warm and soulful vocals.

Growing up, Michael Jackson was on all the time in the house. He is still my fave to this day.

I think music can sometimes feel too synthetic (especially in dance music), so having a raw, soulful vocal on a track just injects life and emotion into it.

I listen to a lot of garage and r&b too. Artists like PARTYNEXTDOOR, Nao, Sweet Female Attitude, Gallant, Drake to name a few.

I think elements of dancehall and afro beat are moving into chart music massively this year. Hugely inspired by that sound. Instant feel good vibe.

I love Sia and her style of songwriting. Its metaphoric and blunt all at the same time. She’s a great vocalist too. I like unique voices.

Tell us about your newest track ‘Hiding Out’

‘Hiding out’ was released this Spring. Written by myself and produced by Jojo F, its an upbeat pop tune with dance and afro beat influences.

Lyrical content wise; I was at a place where I  felt like I was hiding away from everything. A feeling of detachment and just wanted something more from life. In my head I knew positivity was around the corner, which I hope the music video portrays, as it’s me and a bunch of my friends having fun.

Having  support from BBC introducing on this,  A remix of by Dots Per Inch is on its way too, just in time for summer. One for all you house music lovers.

Single is out now alongside the music video, go check it out!

What’s the best gig you’ve ever played?

I played in the main room at The Institute in Birmingham . The venue is amazing and some incredible artists have played there.

I love doing live p.a at nightclubs. The energy and atmosphere is always insane.

I performed at MISS SWIMSUIT UK at DSTRKT London last week too, which was amazing. First time performing on a catwalk with my dancers! Walking and dancing on a shiny surface in heels is harder than it looks!

What are you listening to right now?

Right this second, “Honey” by Moby is playing

What’s been your career highlight/proudest moment?

I love collaborating with other artists. I’m excited to announce that on my next upcoming single I have IRONIK on as a feature! We’ve worked on a few projects this year which will all be revealed soon! Super exciting as I used to listen to his music at school with my friends. Back when we’d bluetooth a song to the entire class using our kool phones.

I’ve just had a collaboration signed to an amazing dance label, who have released some of David Guetta’s stuff! (More to be revealed soon) This is super exciting for me!

I think it’s important to reflect and feel proud of your achievements and journey. I’m my own worst critic and sometimes forget to give myself a pat on the back because I’m too busy moving onto the next step.

What would your dream festival line-up be?

MJ For a whole weekend, imagine that! He could do all the slow throwback Jackson 5 songs in the mornings and the absolute anthems with Slash by night.

What advice do you have for aspiring artists trying to break into the industry?

Don’t let the industry break you, whilst you try to break IT! I think the most important thing is to keep pushing forward towards your goal no matter what. It’s easier said than done, but I think in ANY creative industry, you’re going to get knocked down hundreds of times, but it’s up to you to pick yourself back up and strive for success. Either that, or get a boring office job you hate and regret not trying that little bit harder.  For aspiring artists, the main thing I’d advise is to not let anyone dim your fire and excitement about your musical projects. Also, take some risks! Life is too short to play it safe all the time. Building a team of like-minded enthusiastic creatives around you is key too.

You can only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what is it?

‘For All We Know’ by NAO. It’s been on repeat for weeks, so I’m clearly not getting bored of it haha.  I think all songs have memories attached to them, and this whole album just brings back the most positive vibes and memories of exploring Amsterdam and traveling earlier this year. Listening to it, is like flicking through an imaginary photo album. Plus her voice is pure gold.

Where can we next see you play?

I’ve been supporting Miss Swimsuit UK so follow their movements. I will also be announcing some exciting festivals over the next few weeks via my social media!

What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2017?

My closest release is a collaboration with DJ/Producer KLEIN ‘Flashing Lights’ , which is out now.

For the rest of 2017 I have my new single “Love on Mine” featuring Ironik coming up, and I’m currently busy in the studio wrapping up my EP, which will be out end of Summer. My aim this year is to work with some more amazing artists and get involved with as many creative projects as I can. Also travel, gain experiences and write write write!
