Mad Alice might just be one of the finest bands emerging from Liverpool rn.  We caught up with mermaid-haired frontwoman and bassist Caitlin Hare to chat fave gigs, dream collabs and what’s on the agenda for the rest of 2017…

Tell us about yourself…

I’m Caitlin! I’m 23, vegetarian, and I’m the frontwoman and bassist of Mad Alice. I grew up on the Wirral, I have two sisters, my favourite film is Moonrise Kingdom and my favourite animal is a bat. I’m also in the process of starting up my own rainbow vintage business, The Octopus Garden.

What does a day in the life of Mad Alice look like?

On our practice days, we get to our rehearsal room early afternoon, and end up chatting for about an hour before we play any music! Then we usually play through our set, or work on something new if we’re feeling inspired – we write really quickly and easily together, it’s so fun. Gig days are much the same but with more beer and stairs involved; and studio days are spent laughing at YouTube videos, eating Doritos and thinking of interesting overdubs.

How would you describe your aesthetic and how does it inspire your music?

I’d say our aesthetic verges on glam rock – we have been likened to Siouxsie Sioux and The Dead Weather. We are all massively inspired by the 70s, both in our style and music: heavy, fun, tacky and loud.

What’s the best gig you have ever played?

We played in Liverpool in a venue called the Buyers Club for a Music Manual night last summer; it was packed, all our mates were there, and the crowd was up for a boogie!

Who would you most like to collaborate with and why?

Jarvis Cocker would be incredible, he’s done so much fun work and it would be interesting to see what take he’d have on our music!

Why do you think the relationship between fashion and music is so strong?

Because they’re both such strong representations of who you are and what you love. They’re cult creators – they allow people to be as creative as they want, and they make people feel like they’re part of something.

What’s your favourite music video?

OK Go – This Too Shall Pass. They’re obviously known for their music videos, but this one is so clever and fun!

Who did you listen to growing up?

Well my dad is a musician too, so we listened to a lot of music together: a lot of Beatles (obviously), The Stranglers, and silly folk songs. Saying that, the first album I bought was Gorillaz’s Demon Days and I was obsessed with Eminem (who wasn’t?).

Who’s your biggest musical inspiration?

Led Zeppelin and Jack White, for sure.

What’s your guilty pleasure, most played track?

Sugababes – Freak Like Me

Last album you listened to all the way through?

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Mosquito

What track gives you goosebumps?

Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip – You Will See Me

What item of clothing can’t you live without?

I have a pair of pink, green and white vintage jeans from the 80s. They’re my perfect jeans – they’re so fun, they go with everything and they fit me like a dream.

What items do you make sure you pack on your travels?

I’m that organised weirdo – I have everything you could imagine from glitter to tissues and pens. But I always have my lyrics book because you never know when you’re going to be inspired.

Who is your style icon and why?

Izzy Baxter from Black Honey because I think we share the same love for Wes Anderson. She’s effortlessly cool, and gets it spot on every time.

Where do you look for fashion inspiration?

Instagram! I think it’s boss looking at what the really creative people I follow wear to go and do their food shopping in. Plus I love London Fashion Week, from the street style to designers like Ashish and Jeremy Scott.

What best describes your style?

Ryan [Mad Alice guitarist] once said to me, “How do you know when you’ve finished getting ready?”, which made me laugh because – I don’t! I love layering and playing with colours and patterns, and I’m hugely inspired by the carefree attitude of 60s festivals: tassels, sparkles, and lots of bright colours!

What’s your favourite fashion trend this season and why?

Rainbows and glitter! They never go out of fashion, but I love it when they appear on catwalks and you can see designers have gone mental for it. I’m also completely in love with a flared sleeve – 70s all over!

If you could steal anyone’s wardrobe whose would it be?

Jimi Hendrix. All of the vintage colours and patterns and flares.

You can only wear one outfit for the rest of the year, what is it?

I have a vintage handmade leopard print unitard I bought for a gig at the end of last year. It’s so comfy and it looks boss with everything! I’d wear that with my pink beret, my No Basic Bombshell rainbow earrings, and a dead colourful jumper from my boyfriend’s extensive collection.

What’s your spirit animal?

That would have to be a hare, because it’s my surname. I also found out the other day that female hares have to fight unsuitable males – ultimate girl power!

What emoji best describes you?

The little red and white mushroom. It’s what my boyfriend uses to describe me.

Who are you currently stalking on Instagram?

@helibells and the whole @confetticrowd are amazing! My best buddy @eggplantella is also the most beautiful gal ever. The whole team at @wearecow are so cool too.

What makes you laugh?

My friends and family! Me and my mum are very close, and we’ve come very close to wetting ourselves laughing before. Alan Partridge is equally hysterical, and Mad Alice share a love for Peep Show.

What’s your secret addiction?

Nutella. It’s the only reason I can’t be vegan, which breaks my heart.

Who’s your celebrity wannabe wife?

Alison Mosshart. I don’t know what I’d do if I met her.

What would your superhero power be?

Probably to be able to fly, so I could go on more adventures.

What was the first thing you did this morning?

Drew a picture of a leopard for a Mad Alice poster and made a smoothie.

Tell us something weird about yourself…

My favourite thing about myself is my toes because they’re perfectly in proportion with each other.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Black Honey, PINS, Fever Ray, Moon Duo and Reignwolf. Lots of girl power right now!

What’s your song to get you ready for a party?

Lady Gaga and Beyonce – Telephone

What do you love about Missguided?

It’s so versatile and inclusive – absolutely everyone can find something they fall in love with from Missguided and make it their own. I also LOVE the Babes of Missguided feature!

Where can we see you perform next?

Next up we are playing with our pals The Shipbuilders on 17th March – watch out for them! Then we are supporting Psyence on the 18th, and playing our single launch gig on April 1st.

What’s on the agenda for 2017?

We’re playing in Manchester on May 3rd, Liverpool May 4th, and we’ve got headline shows coming up in Liverpool and Leeds in September’
