She’s one of the most hotly-tipped young female singer-songwriters of the year and we’re not surprised. You only need to listen to Asha’s latest track Down to see what she’s about. We caught up her to chat about favourite gigs, spirit animals and who she’s currently stalking on Instagram…
Tell us about yourself…
I’m Asha. I’m a singer songwriter from Beckenham, and I’m 21. I was not always a singer. Dance had my heart for about 12 years, but destiny brought me to music.
I went to BRIT School for years and studied musical theatre, which I loved and that kind of led me to find music. I gigged around London for about a year trying to find/perfect my sound. Unexpectedly I was given a publishing deal around 2 years ago and after this I started going to studio sessions where I wrote my own material which was amazing. shortly after I started releasing my material. My sound is kind of a mix between R&B and neo soul. The vibe is fresh, young and cool!
How do you find inspiration for your style?

My favorite gig EVER to date has to be my performance at XOYO, where I was supporting Delilah. I had never received such an amazing response from an audience before, which I never expected as I knew no one really knew who I was. But the performance was amazing, I felt so alive, and just to see people singing along and clapping and dancing to my songs was a dream come true. I’ll never forget that night for the rest of my life!

Why do you think the relationship between fashion and music is so strong?
I think that the relationship between music and fashion is so strong because without a ‘look’ its nearly impossible to be noticed in the industry. You have to have a style, a particular look so that people recognize your brand. I think music & fashion go hand in hand, they live in perfect harmony.
What’s your favourite music video?
My all time favorite music video definitely has to be Kelela -A Message. It was done so simply yet it had so much depth. I loved the metallic effect that was over Kelela’s body and the pureness of that half of the video. It didn’t distract you from the song and I always think that’s important.
Also the cartoon effect half way through and at the ending of the video was sooooo cool!
