#MISSGUIDEDDISCOVERED: THE TUTS
Meet The Tuts, the all-female, all-feminist DIY ‘3 tone’ band from London. They’ve produced all their tracks and videos themselves (hence DIY) which is pretty cool if you ask us. We caught up with them to chat musical inspirations, secret addicitons and celebrity wannabe wives…
Tell us about yourself…
Nadia: We’re a band called The Tuts (brown, white & black) of Pakistani, Caribbean and English descent. We’re best friends and we’re write and perform songs together about personal trauma to feel better and empower other women.

What 5 travel essentials can’t you live without on tour?
N: toothbrush, makeup bag, inhaler, thermals & headphones
B: Hot water bottle, makeup, my drumming practise pad, my Dr martins and vodka
Harriet: Pillow, hot water bottle, a good conditioner, make up bag, I feel weird if I don’t say toothbrush haha.
Your videos are amazing, what’s the inspiration?
H: We love yummy aesthetics and themes. My sister, Jennifer comes up with an idea as soon as she hears the song we want to make the video to and we always go with that first idea like it’s meant to be, natural. Our first single from our album was ‘Jackie’ themed. 1970s style. Our second single was kind of Clueless style, directed by Liam Thomson and ‘Pretzel films’.
N: We go with the vibe of the song, the video should enhance the meaning and follow the narrative. Most of our video are done by a girl called Jennifer Doveton, she’s very skilled.
B:Yeah we like working with people who have a vision for the song, and we usually just go with it, and contribute ideas along the way. In the future I think it would be great if we directed our own video. We have so many ideas for videos, but the budget is just limiting us right now.
How would you describe your aesthetic and how does it inspire your music?
N: Our aesthetic is very much let’s have fun, let’s stand up for stuff we believe in and this translates into OIIIII IN YOUR FACE high energy songs and jumping around on stage whipping our hair.
H: Be feminine, or don’t. Either is fine. We wear what we want. That reflects in our music, we’ll speak about stuff we care about and won’t care if there’s a backlash or controversy as a result of that.
B: We’re very high energy we love being the life of the party, and that comes through our music and how we look and what we wear on stage.
Who’s the coolest person you’ve met so far?
H: Pauline Black
B: It has to be Pauline Black. She’s a certain kind of women who knows who she is and knows what she wants.

What’s the best gig you have ever played?
B: I would have to say supporting Adam Ant in Glasgow at the royal concert hall.
H: Hard to pick but playing with Adam Ant in Glasgow was certainly up there. Also our London headline show on our album tour.
N: There’s so many like Glastonbury, supporting Kate Nash & The Selecter, Adam Ant at the Royal Concert Hall Glasgow but in terms of personal achievements it’s got to be the headline SOLD OUT london show following the release of our album ‘update your brain’ at the Lexington in London. The crowd was on fire! they were screaming all the words, so interactive and stage invaded us at the end.
What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2016?
N: We’ve just released our first ever album ‘update your brain’ so we’re gonna keep promoting that, fighting the patriarchy and undercover racism until we get world domination. We’re actually gonna be doing a shoot with teen vogue and some other bits of press etc. We also need to catch up on beauty sleep, vitamin intake and get rid of our acne scars.

Why do you think the relationship between fashion and music is so strong?
N: It’s all art. Music is the audio and fashion is the visual and together they make a strong statement. We need fashion as our armour on stage, to represent part of who we are. Fashion needs music to enhance their work and for models to stomp down the runway. I wanna play a fashion event and be in the middle of a circular runway.
H: To me, both are empowering.
B: You really can’t have one without the other. I always thought the feeling music give you is the same feeling you get when you wear your favourite outfit, and that feeling is priceless. I think that’s why the bond between the two is so strong.
