Missguided Discovered: Dovley
This week we are obsessing over creative babe Dovley. She is a musician, writer, business-woman and all-round inspiration. She chatted to us ahead of the release of her new album ‘Beautiful Chaos’ in February.
2019 has been a killer year for the Boston-born musician, she released her massive single Prism, started working on her very own sitcom and spent some serious time in the studio creating her new album. We caught up with Dovley to find out more.
Hey Dovley, how are you?
I’ve been amazing! Just working my butt off getting ready for all of the exciting stuff to come in 2020.
Tell us a little bit about yourself!
I’m originally from Boston, Massachusetts but I’ve lived in Los Angeles for over 10 years. I grew up playing piano, making beats and I’ve been writing songs as long as I can remember.
I moved to LA in my early teens with my Panamanian mom, who’s a legend. Me and my mom have both always been adventurers and I knew if I was going to get deeper in the music industry, I had to move out here and give it my all.
Do you have a musical family?
It’s funny because I have always loved writing and playing music, but there’s no one in my immediate family who plays any instruments. Growing up, my mom was a beauty queen and her talent was singing but that’s all. Making music was always something I gravitated towards and I was lucky enough to have her full support.
What do you like to do when you’re not creating music?
When I’m not doing music, I’m either doing something creative or business-related. I run the record label (Cromadiscope) that my music is released under, so that takes up a lot of my spare time. I also love DJing and having jam sessions so much, that I’ll often throw parties at my house for my friends when I’m not playing out at clubs and venues.
If I’m not doing either of those things, I’m probably working on Festival Season which is a comedy TV series I’m currently writing and producing, inspired by my experiences in the music industry.
How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard it before?
I think my music can be described as a combination of genres. Definitely electronic with pop, house, R&B and contemporary elements but I it doesn’t completely fit in any of those boxes.
I like to call it “digi-ganic-future-pop” which pretty much means digital music with organic elements and a future take on familiar music, inspired by the past. *laughs* I hope that makes sense.
Do you have a writing process?
My creative process definitely shifts from song to song, depending on what inspires me first. Sometimes I’ll find a cool guitar or piano riff and I’ll build the track around that then write the lyrics and melody.
Other times I’ll get inspired by something that happened in my life or a particular lyric and I start writing a poem that turns into a melody. Then I build the track around that.
Which of your tracks means the most to you?
The track that means the most to me right now is the title track off my upcoming album Beautiful Chaos. The song is about that moment when you look back on your life and everything makes sense. It’s about finding the beauty derived from all of the struggles and tribulations that, I believe, ultimately lead you to the right place.
What was your favourite album as a teenager?
As a teenager my favorite album, or better yet albums were definitely Janet Jackson’s The Velvet Rope and Daft Punk Discovery. I was obsessed with both and was pretty much inspired to write and produce music because of both of them.
What’s your Boss Babe Mantra?
“Just because it hasn’t been done, doesn’t mean it can’t be done”.
What can people expect to see from you in 2020?
2020 is going to be a great year! I’m actually gearing up to put out two new songs in the next few weeks, a laid-back love song “Ricochet” and a dance anthem “Be About It”.
We’re also releasing my album in the spring in conjunction with a nationwide tour so I’m getting ready for that. I’m also gearing up to shoot season 1 of Festival Season later in the year so stay tuned!
