Tell us about yourself…

I’m a native South African living in Switzerland and currently spreading my  exotic deep house sounds around the world.

Describe your sound in five words…

Melodic, pure, exotic, wild, raw.

What was your big break into the industry?

When I released ‘Come With Me’ in 2013.  That track got huge support and actually put me on the map. I still use it often in my live sets because it never fails to get the crowd going.

When and how did you discover your passion and skills in music?

I have always had a huge passion for music but it grew a lot when I realised how creative you can be with electronic music. I had some friends in Zurich that had their own studios, and they introduced me to producing and I got hooked on it. I love creating and crafting things, as once you have the result it feels amazing!

What are you working on at the moment?

I am actually having a few days home at the moment, and can focus on a new EP. It’s been a really busy summer and studio days came short as well (as did many other things). I started working on an album a while back, but due to the extensive summer touring I had to put that on hold. I am also looking into options to have my own Purified events, but all of these nice things need a lot of time and work. So yeah… lots to do and I am glad I can catch up a little now!

What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2016?

Finishing the ideas I mentioned above ☺ And also there will still be tours throughout Australia, South Africa, Brazil, US and Europe.

What’s been the proudest moment of your career so far?

The thing that I love most is receiving touching feedback from fans. We all go through difficult times in life and knowing that my music has helped people through is simply amazing. But of course news like being booked for Coachella this year was super exciting.

Best gig you have ever played?

I have many memorable ones. There is not one that was the best. One of the most amazing settings I’ve ever seen for a show was on the Fiji islands for “Your Paradise”. These guys did an amazing job and up till now I’m still dreaming of that place.

If you could collab with anyone who would it be?

Right now I’d find Odesza or Disclosure interesting.

What three tips would you give to emerging artists trying to break into the industry?

To find your own, unique style. Always keep quality high, send demos to labels that really fit your style. Be patient, persistent, humble and friendly ☺

Who inspires you in the industry?

I enjoy acts who perform live and use a lot of instruments while playing. It’s like a band / dj hybrid. Being one person I find that still a bit hard to imagine but maybe one day I can figure something out. 😉

Who is your guilty pleasure most played?

Hmm… that would probably be Sons Of Maria – ‘Chimera’. I also enjoy playing groovy tracks by Antonio Giacca that use soulful vocals or piano parts. On the dance floor they work like a charm.

Favourite music video?

To be honest, I haven’t been watching any music videos in a long time. When I was younger I felt they were still very creative. Nowadays many of them are similar but I guess its also more challenging as many topics have been addressed already in videos before.

What’s the last thing you listened to?

I just went through the track selection for my next Purified radio show so the last track that was on was Damian Lazarus – Sacred Dance Of The Demon (Gorgon City Remix)

What song do you want to be playing as you walk into the club?

I like to hear new and fresh tunes, so any song I haven’t heard before!

Best song to get ready to?

That changes constantly, right now I’m addicted to Daniel Portman’s “Abandon”. I am sure I will play this for quite some time in my sets.

What item of clothing can’t you live without?

A hoodie. With all the travelling it’s a must to be warm and comfortable.

What items do you make sure you pack on tour?

I usually pack from warm clothing options to semi cold as I often travel across different countries and climates before coming home again. And all of it should go into carry on luggage ☺  For travelling I always have comfortable small headphones for the plane, a scarf that I occasionally use as blanket during flights and a portable charger.

Who is your style icon and why?

I would say Kate Moss. She has always been a fashion icon for me.

Where do you look for fashion inspiration?

Like with music, I take inspiration from wherever I visit in the world. I love pieces of African jewellery for example; as it makes me think of home while I am far away from it. I love seeing different styles and trends in the countries I visit.

What best describes your style on stage?

I love nice clothes, but when I am on tour and having to travel from one place to another, most times with only an overnight stay, I like to pack light. It’s important for me to be comfortable on stage, therefore I tend to wear a nice pair of shorts (in summer) or a pair of jeans paired with a top and usually Converse!

What’s your favourite fashion trend this season and why?

I spent every Monday in Ibiza this summer for my residency at Privilege and I have to say I fell in love again with crochet tops! You can find really nice ones in the famous Hippy Market there.

If you could steal anyone’s wardrobe who’s would it be?

I think Rihanna’s wardrobe would be a lot of fun. 😉

In both fields you can really express yourself a lot – just in different ways.
