Q+A with upsahl
Hey UPSAHL, How are you doing?
Hi! I’m good, just been quarantining and making a lot of music in my pyjamas all day, haha!
We love the fact that you are a guitar wielding singer. When did you start to learn how to play guitar?
My parents got me a guitar for Christmas when I was five years old, and my dad just started teaching me a bunch of songs that I loved. Since then, it’s been the instrument that I’ve written most of my songs on.
Do you have any advice for people that want to follow in your footsteps?
Don’t have a plan b. Making music and performing on stage is all I ever wanted to do. There can’t be anything else.

You have written songs for big names including Dua Lipa. Do you prefer lending your pen or writing lyrics for yourself?
Honestly, both are kind of similar for me. Anytime I’m writing, I look at it from an artist’s perspective. However, when I’m writing for somebody else, I feel like I can just let go and write a dope song without having to worry about the “sound working for my project.” When I’m writing for myself, I’m much more involved in the production, and I get pretty meticulous with making sure everything is exactly how I want it.
What’s your fave moment of your career so far?
Going on a proper tour for the first time changed everything for me. Touring has been my dream since I was a kid, so getting to see new places, meet new fans and be on stage every night was f*cking amazing.
How have you found lockdown?
I mean, I don’t like being indoors most of the day and I miss playing shows and traveling freely, but I’ve been fortunate in that I got into writing songs over Zoom pretty quickly, and that has kept me very inspired. I’ve been doing like 2 sessions a day. Overall, I feel lucky to be healthy and still making music.

What has been your fave activity to do this year?
Aside from writing songs, I’ve gotten a little into painting. Some of it is shit, but it’s been fun!
What were your ave album as a teenager?
Rock Steady by No Doubt. I was obsessed with Gwen Stefani being the badass front woman of a band, so I listened to that album a bunch.
What’s your fave item of clothing RN?
I love cut up, super cropped sweatshirts. A few months ago, I did a livestream show, and about 5 minutes before we went live, I still had no clue what I was going to wear on stage – typical. But I found this old sweatshirt that I just frantically started cutting up and just threw it on over a bra. Since then, I’ve started cutting up all my clothes like that.

Sushi is my ride or f*cking die. I could eat it for every meal of the day lol
What do you usually order at the bar?
Tequila soda with lime is my go to.
No.1 holiday destination?
Paris! I went two summers ago and fell in love with it. The vibe there is so romantic and inspiring.
