We have teamed up with The Beat London radio station to bring you Babes of The Beat. This iconic partnership includes exclusive interviews from the radio hosts, as well as a discount for The Beat London listeners. We chatted with Başak Erten from the show  #TheSocial, to find out about her career journey, days in lockdown and her favourite albums.

Başak Erten is originally from London and at just 26 years old, hosts her own show on The Beat London radio station. If you don’t already know, get to know. #TheSocial explores culture, community and connection. Each week Başak interviews guests about their music, art and culture, whilst having laugh and playing some BIG RnB and Hip Hop tunes. Previous guests have included Ashley Walters and Lianne La Havas.

If #TheSocial sounds up your street (which I mean, of course it does), then make sure you tune in: Sundays 12pm-2pm on the Beat London 103.6FM.

Basak Q+A

How long have you been at The Beat?

We’ve had our show, #TheSocial on the Beat London now for 7 months. Before that, I was working at Reprezent Radio as Content Producer, on the Pharaoh G and Kash show (shoutout to those guys) and the gal-dem show.

What can listeners expect to hear in an episode of #TheSocial?

Our show, #TheSocial is about all things culture, community and connection. I started the show to give unorthodox creatives a space to be heard and be seen! Listeners can expect thought-provoking conversation, celebrity guests and lots of energy. We love what we do, and I hope that shines through.

What has been your most surreal career moment so far?

So many! The calibre of guests we’ve been able to have on the show in only 7 months in has been amazing. Ashley Walters, EARTHGANG, and Lianne La Havas to name a few. Lianne La Havas, who I spoke to recently, has to be a recent favourite. Her and I connected so genuinely and were just gushing over each other on-air the whole time! It was a moment.

Three words to describe your show for someone who has never listened before?

Radio, with social heart. (Wait that’s 4!)

Favourite teenage album growing up?

Jhene Aiko is one of my favourite artists. She’s so very spiritual and connected. Sail Out was definitely on repeat during those years.

Do you think enough is being done for women in the radio and music industry?

Every radio station I’ve been in, has been heavily male-dominated, in terms of its staff and presenters. That being said, I think I’ve been lucky enough to always land in super-inclusive environments where I feel that the female presenters, like my fellow Babes of the Beat, have been heard and amplified as much as possible. I think the challenge lies in getting started at all! I always had such a passion and a purpose for conscious messaging. I knew what it could do to change hearts and minds, it was however initially very difficult to bridge the gap. Knowing all of this make me extra proud now, because I know what it took, and how hard my (all female) team and I have worked to get here. And this is just the tip of the iceberg!

How have you had to adapt your work during the pandemic?

I love being able to interview guests face to face, see my amazing producers and be live and direct straight from the station. There is absolutely nothing like the energy and the fun that we have in that room on a Sunday! We truly have a great time creating this show. Since then we have adjusted of course. Safety is the most important thing with all that is going on. After getting all of the necessary equipment, I’ve been able to broadcast fairly easily from my home. Can’t wait to be back at the station of course!

What does a typical day in lockdown look like for you?

Coffee (oat milk) radio work, confirming guests, building the brand, status updates, best friend chats, workouts and some more work!

“We are on go-mode right now in the best way so lockdown has been a blessing in terms of having the time to get bits done.”

Başak Erten

What can we expect from the show in 2021?

We are taking it up another notch all 2021! Expect some very famous faces to grace our airwaves, compelling content, and a lot of me, saying the word ‘vibes!’. We are on go-mode right now in the best way so lockdown has been a blessing in terms of having the time to get bits done.
