How to measure your inside leg and find your jeans length

When measuring your inseam, it’s first important to note how you want your jeans to actually fit. For example, boyfriend jeans are designed to be full length and sit on the top of your shoe, whereas mom jeans are, by default, ankle grazers.

What is an inseam?

The inseam measures the distance from your groin through to the base of your ankle. Depending on how long you want the jeans to fit, you can adjust this measurement to find the right length for you.

If you are unsure about which style you want, take a look at the Denim Jeans Fit Guide for more information.

How do you measure an inseam?

Whilst it is possible to measure an inseam yourself, it is much easier if you have a willing family member or housemate who can help you out.

  • Stand up straight with your legs slightly spread
  • Place the top of the tape measure on your inner thigh, as close to the crotch as possible
  • Pull the tape measure tight and run it down to the bottom of your ankle (just below the ankle bone that sticks out)
  • Your inseam will be the measurement between these two points

Once you have this figure, congratulations, you can now find your jeans length and you can also apply it to any trousers you buy. Remember to consider the style of the jeans (do you want ankle grazers? Do you want long boyfriend jeans? etc), also consider the shoes that you are likely to pair with them. Eg. If you are wearing heels or chunky trainers, you may need your jeans to be longer.
