Meet the Women Behind HANX Condoms…

In case you missed it, we now sell Hanx condoms. Well there isn’t much else to do in lockdown, so it’s time to make the most of those endless hours stuck inside with your boyf.

Hanx is a sexual wellness brand with a difference. Created by childhood friends Sarah and Farah, these babes are on a mission to eliminate the stigma around buying condoms and lube. Hanx products are fully vegan, sustainable and created from a women’s point of view (finally).

Meet the founders…

We chatted to Sarah to find out more about Hanx, how they got started and what sets them apart from other brands on the high street.

How did you start working together?

We are good friends from school, so go way back! After university we both ended up in London. Farah embarked on a career working in investment banking, whilst I moved around within medicine, focussing on gynaecology, obstetrics and sexual health.

HANX was born at the end of 2015, when we realised there was no condom brand out there talking to women or representing what we wanted.

What made you decide to set up HANX?

We set up sexual wellness brand, HANX, after meeting for a long lunch one random Monday and started talking about that condom aisle… The garish packaging, the shame you feel being seen with condoms, the negative feelings they conjure. Sex is supposed to be positive, no?

We felt that there was a lot to change in the condom itself, especially from a woman’s perspective. The tacky smell, the ingredients and sustainability aspects, the need for vegan options and ultimately the mission of the company you are buying from.

What is the message behind the company?

HANX is here to make the world a better place when it comes to sexual wellness.

We make gynaecologist-approved sexual health products that are designed with a woman’s needs in mind. We’re not timid and we don’t gloss over the realities of being a woman. As experts in our field, we’re here to help and here to talk. But importantly, just because we have to chat about cum and discharge sometimes, it never means we can’t have a fun while we’re doing it. And that’s a beautiful thing.

What’s your favourite fact about the female anatomy?

The clitoris has about 8,000 sensitive nerve endings, double the amount of a penis. And it doesn’t stop there… sensations started in the clitoris can spread across the whole pelvic area, affecting around 15,000 other nerve endings.

Why should we breakdown stigmas around condoms?

Look. Women have sex. It’s extremely good and cool. But for some reason, in 2020, everyone’s still scared to talk to us about it. So, we end up having to buy condoms with names like ‘Poundimus Maximus’ or ‘Large Steve’. And if that wasn’t embarrassing enough, we also have to pray to the Gods of ‘Please Don’t Let That Be My Boss Over There’ so we don’t bump into anyone we know at the till. Here’s the good news: that’s about to change. When it comes to women’s wellness, the future is open, honest and on our terms.

Sexual wellness is part of our overall wellbeing, just like our physical health and mental health, so should be treated with the same importance. More women are turning away from contraception that alters their hormones and the condom is the single most effective contraceptive that protects against sexually transmitted infections. This is fact.

HANX is also committed to positively impacting the wellbeing of our dedicated customers, regularly posting articles about mental health, cancer awareness, sex advice, and body positivity. Our “HANX Life” forum is opening this conversation and normalising positive sexual wellness.

What impact do you hope HANX will have on young women and their attitude to sex?

We want young women to be able to talk openly and honestly with regards to sexual wellness, and have a positive attitude to sex.

When we started HANX, and still today, we have barriers because of taboos around sex. However, this only gives us more fire to succeed and break down these barriers!
