Graduation degrees vs careers

If you are at University, but you still aren’t sure what you want to do in your career, congratulations, you’re 100% normal. The pressure to decide on a dream job and to spend your whole time in education working towards one goal can be overwhelming. It’s okay if you decide to do something different with your life, figuring out these things take time.

We chatted to team members at Missguided about the university degrees they achieved and how they ended up in their role today. Some of them were always on a path to fashion, but others couldn’t have been more different. Keep scrolling to get the lowdown on the Missguided HQ colleagues.

EMILY

Emily degree graduation
  • Job role: Graphic Designer
  • Uni: Arts University Bournemouth
  • Degree: Fashion communications
  • Year of graduation: 2017

I had no idea what I wanted to do when I went to university, just that I loved fashion. I was making weird lil’ accessories at home and I just decided to apply for a Fashion design course. After many stressful times and all nighters slaying away at a sewing machine, it was really taking a toll on my mental health and was just not a good fit for me. I decided to switch and do communications in my final year, so I took a year out which was absolutely the best thing I did. After graduating, I moved to Manchester with the idea of going into fast fashion with some sort of graphics or marketing role. I ended up with a small business for a couple years, got a sh*t load of experience with graphics and videography,  then applied and ended up at my dream job at MG.

  • Job role: Creative Content Executive
  • Uni: Sheffield Hallam
  • Degree: Journalism
  • Year of graduation: 2016

I have always enjoyed writing, so i decided to take journalism at university, specialising in magazine feature writing in my final year. Soon after graduating I realised just how competitive fashion and music magazines were. Most big companies wanted you to work and live in London without pay, which wasn’t feasible for me! I started copywriting for a small marketing agency and freelancing on the side. After three years of content writing and working my way up in various companies, I landed a dream role at Missguided. Now I write and manage content for the Babezine blog, basically all I’ve ever wanted to do.

Hannah

Hannah harrison
  • Job role: Brand & Influencer Executive
  • Uni: Nottingham Trent University
  • Degree: Fashion Management
  • Year of graduation: 2016

I had no idea what I wanted to do when I went to uni but I knew I loved clothes and anything fashion related. The course was pretty broad so we studied all types of fashion related jobs you could get in a head office. Instagram was properly taking off when I left uni so starting my career in a job that combined this and fashion was amazing and felt quite niche at the time. I started in social media then slowly moved over to the influencer side. Talking to like-minded people every day about clothes for a brand I used to write reports about at uni is like a dream come true! It all comes full circle, trust your journey.

GEORGIA

  • Job role: Graphic Designer
  • Uni: Leeds Arts University
  • Degree: Graphic Design
  • Year of graduation: 2019

Although I studied graphics, I’ve always been interested in fashion. Being a graphic designer at Missguided combines both of my passions, and has allowed me to gain experience within the fashion industry.

MILLIE

  • Job role: Student Marketing Assistant
  • Uni: The University of Sheffield
  • Degree: Psychology
  • Year of graduation: 2020

I decided at the end of my first year that I didn’t want to have a career in Psychology, which was my original plan! I absolutely loved the social psychology aspect of my course and loved learning about how people’s behaviour can be influenced, which lead me to marketing! In my final year of university, I was a part of a student brand ambassador programme and gained a real interest in student marketing. Once I had finished my degree, I saw the role of student marketing assistant at Missguided and knew this was the role for me!

JASMINE

  • Job role: Social Media Executive
  • Uni: University of Central Lancashire (UCLan)
  • Degree: Fashion Promotion
  • Year of graduation: 2017

I always knew I wanted to work in fashion from a young age however knew the design side wasn’t for me and the business side of things interested me so much more. I chose my course based on it being really broad and focussing on all areas of fashion promotion, from marketing and advertising to creative shoot styling and packaging design as I wasn’t sure what avenue I wanted to go down. When I was at uni, social media and bloggers (now known as influencers) were just starting to pick up so I found a way to incorporate that into every project I did, including my dissertation and I’ve been obsessed ever since!

ANITA

  • Job role: Senior Graphic Designer
  • Uni: Salford Uni
  • Degree: MA Communication Design
  • Year of graduation: 2015

I did my Graphic Design undergrad degree in Italy (where I’m from) and moved to Manchester for a master. I always had an interest for fashion and a passion for branding, packaging, campaigns and anything to do with the design of a brand. I freelanced and tried different jobs but in my spare time I was working on fashion and branding projects of my own. I finally decided to try get into fashion and thanks to Missguided I had the opportunity to make this my job and I absolutely love it. I think if you have a passion for a particular field (even though it’s not exactly what you studied for) the best thing is get involved even though it might seem scary at first and learn as you go!

Sarah

Girl at graduation
  • Job role: Beauty Buyers Admin Assistant
  • Uni: Northumbria University
  • Degree: Fashion Design & Marketing
  • Year of graduation: 2018

I studied Fashion Design and Marketing, however, after uni I went into the Fashion Buying side, thought I’d put my shopping skills to good use! I absolutely loved being involved in every step of the buying cycle, from the development of sampling, fitting, and getting the product online. I worked across fashion for 18 months, before moving to the beauty department! Beauty’s completely different to fashion, but I LOVE it! You work very closely with brands, and build really strong supplier relationships, I also work closely with the Marketing and Social teams, and love being involved with all aspects! We’ve just launched our own branded Beauty range too! Definitely a department to watch!
