Making fresh tasty food doesn’t have to be time consuming or expensive. As long as you plan your meals and do a weekly shop, it’s pretty easy to stay on budget.

Pad Thai

This can be made veggie friendly by swapping out the prawns for tofu or Quorn pieces. All you need is pepper, sugar, soy sauce, lime juice, noodles, garlic, prawns (or veggie alternative), onion, egg and peanuts. You can double up the recipe and make extra for your whole flat, or to eat throughout the week.

Veggie and bean stew

This warming meal is perfect for cold winter nights, it’s cheap as chips and will help you get your five a day. You will need carrots, onions, potatoes, tomato puree, tinned tomatoes, tinned butter beans, kidney beans and stock.

Add a little flavour by throwing in spices including garam masala, turmeric, paprika, chilli flakes and garlic powder (or fresh garlic). Buying spices may seem like a pain, but they are a one-off purchase that will improve your meals 100%.

Chorizo pasta

This 15 minute meal is always a winner. All you need is pasta, red onion, chorizo, courgette, garlic and parmesan cheese. Couldn’t be easier.

Chickpea curry

This delish curry works out at £0.57 per person, which is pretty good going if you ask us. It’s healthy, completely vegan and can be frozen into multiple portions. You will need 1 red onion, garlic, 2 cans of chickpeas, a can of chopped tomatoes, cumin, chilli flakes, cayenne pepper, a tin of coconut milk, cherry tomatoes and that’s it! Serve with rice, naan bread or whatever you want.
